The Dream Frontier

Dreams… the word itself invokes almost too many things to list. From the most ancient, remote times, people of all backgrounds, walks of life and cultures have talked about, shared and discussed how dreams have had an influence upon our collective and individual experiences of life.

From remote antiquity, many of the most ancient writings and books - often referred to as 'sacred writings' - mention dreams very clearly. Regardless of culture or time, dreams have touched and brought changes to both ancestors' and moderns' lives, and dreams are still with us.

Dreams were often seen as the 'messenger' of the divine, the harbinger of news and information people would not have been able to acquire otherwise. In fact, it was almost 'de rigueur' for the god/gods/goddesses to communicate with people (mortals) via the person's dreams. If a deity was worth his/her salt, it would communicate with you through your dreams, bringing you messages of hope, inspiration, of news concerning various events (upcoming) and so on. Almost like the ancient version of our modern internet, minus corporate committees and bureaucratic bungling, or long distance charges!

In wanting to understand these divine messages and their impacts, people also developed many of the arts of divination to that end. People wanted, and still want to know, what is this seemingly strange and fascinating life they lead while sleeping?! And what is this place where they lead this life??!!

Imagine an environment where time and space have a very different set of physics and science than the waking life. In dreams for instance, you can easily walk through a wall, or even float through a ceiling or a floor, or even fly (and no, it's not a Freudian thing).

You can travel vast distances fast as thought and converse with long term friends that are found only in dreams. You can experience what can be called past lives, or even projections of consciousness (astral travels), or visit specific locations and the very same location(s) over many years. These are places that are only found in the dream state.

You can undertake tasks, work or have several days' worth of the equivalent of life in mere seconds it seems, and so much more! Insane you think?? Think again!!!

Too often we make civilized attempts to elevate ourselves and our societies above what is 'perceived' as the superstitions of the old ways, and we can quickly relegate the whole idea of dreams as no more than the remnants of the past. Unfortunately, a study and understanding of our dreams and dreams in general can immensely enrich the whole landscape of our lives, often in ways we don't foresee immediately.

We can benefit greatly in realizing that even today, in modern times, dreams play an important role in whom and what we are as 'beings'. In this series of writings on dreams, I hope to be able to shed some light on an often misunderstood or misinterpreted dimension of our very human existence.

The Study of Dreams and Dream Analysis is one of the cornerstones of modern day Jungian Analysis, having a profound impact on our understanding of human motivations, interactions and existence. It is a potent tool that helps people resolve past issues and move on with their lives.

Being a channeler and 'student' of consciousness for nearly 23 years now, I've come to appreciate the adventures we undertake when we release our bodies to sleep. With a bit of practice anyone can easily recognize what it is he/she does as sleep takes us away… where our consciousness goes, what it does, what journeys other than the 'physical' we explore.

In the vast dimensions we call dreams, we do more than hallucinate or invent insanities. Truly a grand adventure awaits us every night. The sometimes strange world of dreams becomes more domesticated when we start to understand the rich tapestry of symbolism dreams weave and use as a 'visual picture-language' base to communicate with the conscious portions of our self, namely the ego.

By this I do not mean that you rush out to the nearest bookstore and buy books like 'One Thousand Dreams Interpreted for You'. In fact, overall, such books may prove counter productive in the long run, because such books describe symbols in a very generic manner, if at all. Not everyone understands the same thing from a common image, nor can a book actually understand the depth of your own life and the often complex personal issues that enable the (your) unconscious to manufacture the images and symbols it sends to you personally in your dealings with specific life challenges.

Personally, dreams have been a tremendous factor in helping revolve and heal past family situations, some of which were quite traumatic and painful. There is a particular set of dreams that span several years in which old wounds and previously unresolved issues were carefully worked out with my step father after he passed away.

The focus of the 'step father series' was to heal and bring us to understand our lives (and the underlying reasons why we shared this family) so that we can move forward, as well as return to a place of love that was not possible while he was still living. This also served to open up to energies that helped my channeling unfold.

Our hope therefore is to help guide you to understand dream symbols in a manner that suits your needs and experiences, providing a sort of 'personal road map or travel guide' that you can work with and thus enrich your relationship with your Higher/Inner Self.

As described earlier, the unconscious communicates by creating or weaving a rich tapestry of images and symbols, some of which come from the fabric of our personal views and daily realities, in its efforts to communicate with the ego portion of your personality. These symbols can also be rooted in the rich field of the emotional contents found in our own being.

The rich field of images and symbols can be mined from any of the many aspects of our life, even our daydreams, or fantasies, all of which is fair game for the unconscious to use if it can convey information that reaches some level of our conscious awareness. Just as with any language, there can be many words to describe one or several things at the same time, so symbols can transmit several meanings all at once, often giving us a multi-level teaching.

If you wish to understand a culture other than your own, from any country in the world, one of the best ways to do that is to learn the language of that culture. By learning its language, you begin to grasp the subtleties and nuances, the ideals and philosophies and the very fabric of that culture. This gives you insights into how the people got the where they are today. Learning the local language also enables you to communicate with the people in that culture, thereby enriching your own experiences in ways that can also move and change you. It adds to who you are, as it adds to whomever you meet from that culture in any way shape or form.

Imagine yourself in China, Tibet, or any of many foreign places, and having to learn some of the language in order to ask directions (and actually get them), or ask for food, etc or... Now, instead of learning the language because you don't understand it, you declare that since it makes no sense to you, it's a whole lot of nonsense, and you further declare that it therefore has no value to you or anyone because of these things. Not very logical is it? Well, there are many people who consider the same towards dreams and the language of dreams.

Learning the language of your dreams in particular will enrich you in ways that can have profound effects on many levels. And the best way to learn this language is to write it down. Now since not many classrooms allow you to sleep in order to learn anything, it can prove to be one of the easiest of lessons to undertake. Try that in regular classrooms!!

One of the greatest keys in learning these lessons is perseverance, exactly the same as in learning any foreign language. You don't expect to learn Russian or French, or any other language simply by wishing it. You already expect to be able to 'get it' after being in the classroom for a while, and the same patience in learning dream language should apply. And since you have been dreaming even before you were born, whether you recall your dreams or not, then such lessons will move along more quickly than you think.

Since the major aspects of this dream language consists primarily of combinations or mixture of emotion filled imagery, it's relatively easy to get acquainted with the symbols, as well as making some sense of them. The more effort on our part, the easier it gets as well. The apparent mystery gets clearer and makes more sense. We can learn this language, and its more than simply learning a language of images and emotions.. as if we are little more than translators. This is a powerful 'living', interactive language of the psyche.

You don't merely have to wake up and write, as if there is no other interaction involved from your part. This rich blend of living symbols interacts with you. You are not merely some sort of secretary for your psyche. The following is perhaps a crude example, but it may make enough sense to get the idea across.

For instance you may be mulling over some challenge, a family or work place situation, a dilemma presently in your life, and you can ask your dream self to help you resolve this while you sleep.

While you are pleasantly sleeping on your bed, you are also simultaneously engaged with various aspects of the dream reality. You build symbols from the rich bed of inner reality in ways that may tap into resources, experimenting with solutions to your dilemma from the depths of the unconscious, working out variables and probabilities perhaps too complex for the conscious mind to fully grasp.

As you process these inner activities, you come across varying possibilities that may then make sense to the conscious and ego portions of the self that you can then use as you return to your sleeping body.

Upon waking, you 'discover' some solution to your challenge right there in your waking mind, perhaps not sure how it got there, but happy nonetheless that you worked it out.

This is a very brief description only of the process, but I believe it explains in a very condensed fashion some of the things we all practice while we sleep soundly, oblivious to the work that goes on behind our daily events.

There are additional benefits to working with dreams. By keeping a record of intuitive symbols that appear in our dreams, we can benefit from hindsight. Imagine picking up your dream diary/journal, opening it at random to a dream you had a few months or even a few years ago, only to have your jaw drop as you avidly read that the particular life situation you find yourself in at this very moment… was in part dreamt of so long ago, even to some minute details, leaving no room for random chance or coincidence!

It doesn't mean that ALL your dreams are easily explored, or immediately interpreted, or at all. There are other times where we have too aggressive an approach, where we want to grab a dream and beat an interpretation out of it. Wanting to scrutinize every nook and cranny of a dream from the intellectual or ego perspective will sometimes not yield any secrets; it may even blast those tender rootlets of dream introspection into smithereens. So tread gently in the beginning.

There are also times when dream elements are garbled, mixed pieces of this and that or even censured by the ego/conscious mind because some issues are difficult for you to work with. Sometimes the unconscious is working on issues for you behind the scene as it were, and when you are consciously ready and willing to address issues, it will help you. There are other times when we are just not willing to go deeper, for various reasons and we defiantly block off, even engage in battles with the unconscious mind, truly hassling ourselves.

Now for the juicy part: throughout time as we know it, there are also some very specific elements of dreams that have stood out more than any other. Dreams that contain premonitions and clairvoyance!

There is also the added advantage of learning to recognize symbols specific to clairvoyant dreams, learning to pick them out at the time of recollection or of writing them out. Being aware of your own personal dream symbols, you can know what some of the events you are calling into your life are, perhaps days or weeks ahead. Now that's a course they don't teach at high school.

These, perhaps more than other dream elements have impressed dreamers in various ways, caught our attention and piqued our curiosity. This is also one of the major accents on these articles, helping you recognize and make good use of the intuitive, clairvoyant elements as they appear in your dreams.

Recognizing intuitive aspects of dreams is not only fun, not only a great adventure, but also a most powerful way to tap into the rich vein of Inner resources each of us is born with, our spiritual heritage.

Being open to the intuitive universe, one dream at a time, you can learn to appreciate your own abilities, building more assurance and wonderment as to the workings of the Inner Universe and reality as a whole. You might eventually be open enough to allow some of these insights to flow through into your daily waking life too.. and not fear being swept away by all this. You are always in control, (and sometimes we are too much in control).

These are some of the aspects we'd like to share with you in these articles. We'd also like to help you discover and identify with your dream landscape by helping you explore some of your dreams. This would require that some of you send us your dreams in order for us to work with you and share what your dreams are trying to convey to you.

Overall, the unconscious is always trying and willing to communicate, and you too can learn this extremely ancient, the most ancient language!
