The Mind in Meditation

by Jean Christian
Excerpted from her book The Guidance of Grace

We are inquiring about how to work with the mind in meditation, how to understand it, silence it and get beyond it.

"As the mind conjectures and structures information that you receive from the world around you, so does it receive from the subtle world, from the world that is not as concrete and linear."

In unconsciousness there is bondage, in wrong relationship there is bondage. Wrong relationships arise from unconsciousness, from not knowing and not understanding. Do you understand the mind and why it exists? Why is it with you? You cannot be in right relationship with the mind if you don’t understand it. Hold consciousness and true understanding of what mind is, how it arises and what it is for. Befriend the mind; know it for what it is. What is your hand for? Befriend the hand. Befriend your lungs... what are they for?

You are a coalescence of components as a being. Have consciousness to each of these aspects of your form. The mind is a part of your form, as the lungs and as the hand. It is not your enemy, it is not your obstacle, but it is a part of you. It is to be befriended in full consciousness and understood. It is to be included and given a role. There can be nothing excluded from your being, nothing rejected, nothing that you put resistance and energy towards and say, ‘I wish you weren’t there.’ That is bondage and that is unconsciousness.

The mind is the brilliant point of perception. It is the crystalline window from which you see and perceive, and then create structure around what you see, sense, and know. It is a way station for information. The information that you gather through your eyes, ears, energy and feelings, come into the brilliant point of integration called the mind and are understood and perceived. The mind is a guide. It is a place to know and to decide what to do with this information. Am I safe?, Is this good?, Shall I move?, Shall I stay still?...

Without the mind there can be no human embodiment. No descent of the divine into physical form. As the mind conjectures and structures information that you receive from the world around you, so does it receive from the subtle world, from the world that is not as concrete and linear. Divine information also passes through the mind. The mind is a very powerful place to create unity, to create integrity and to create evolution of consciousness. The mind widens, opens and expands, creating greater and greater vistas of structuring and of integration of information. The mind must be included.

In meditation then, to befriend the mind, to love what mind is, to see it as the brilliant crystalline window that receives from everywhere. Commit to using this mind for more and more subtle conjecturing, for more and more expansive receiving. See it as a high clearinghouse where information creates freedom and expansion. Learn to include the mind in your meditation.

As the mind is habituated to information at a more crass or lower level, don’t reject the mind itself, but compassionately realize that this is the habit. This is the well-trodden path; this is the use of the mind that is firmly there. Let it carry the syllables of a mantra, let it be part of that. Observing the in rising, the full circle of the sweep of breath, the rising of the ‘ah’ towards the evening of the ‘mm.’ Let the mind contemplate and watch. Let it contemplate and watch the most beautiful thoughts. The thoughts of expansiveness, the thoughts of what love really is.

The mind dictates to the physical form, to the emotional being, and the mind guides your incarnation. As the mind hosts these thoughts of freedom, the thoughts of all-encompassing becoming, we change the pathways; we change the patterns the mind repeats. For the mind is still an organ of repetition built on patterns. As you learn to set the highest patterns onto the organ of the mind, the consciousness of your greater being is not bound by mind. Mind is meant to be part of this evolution, and as you set the highest patterns into your thoughts and mind, you set the highest patterns into your body and into your organs.

A meditation can look like setting high patterns into the mind. Holding thoughts of love, statements of beauty. Don’t confine meditation to an expectation of sitting in absolute silence and rejecting any part of your embodiment. You are here to set the highest patterns of becoming into your being, and as you do this you will become free. You consciousness will soar, unbound.
