 The Seven Myths of Energy Independence

Despite its immense appeal, energy independence is a nonstarter — a populist charade masquerading as energy strategy that's no more likely to succeed (and could be even more damaging) than it was when Nixon declared war on foreign oil in the 1970s. Not only have we no realistic substitute for the oceans of oil we import, but many of the crash programs being touted as a way to quickly develop oil replacements — "clean coal," for example, or biofuels — come at a substantial environmental and political cost. And even if we had good alternatives ready to deploy — a fleet of superefficient cars, say, or refineries churning out gobs of cheap hydrogen for fuel cells — we'd need decades, and great volumes of energy, including oil, to replace all the cars, pipelines, refineries, and other bits of the old oil infrastructure — and thus decades in which we'd depend on oil from our friends in Riyadh, Moscow, and Caracas. Paradoxically, to build the energy economy that we want, we're going to lean heavily on the energy economy that we have.

This simple practice is appropriate for people of all ages and most fitness levels. Participants move around the room (or sit in chairs) and connect with each other through eye contact and the laughter exercises in which they simulate laughter that quickly becomes genuine.

A Woman, a Village and a War on Plastic Bags

Rebecca Hosking’s moment came on a speck of sugar-white beach in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The beach on Midway, 1,300 miles northwest of Honolulu, was covered with thousands of dead albatrosses rotting in the tropical sun. In their split-open bellies, the BBC wildlife film producer said, she saw the plastic that had killed them: cigarette lighters, pens, toys, pill bottles, knives and forks, golf balls and toothbrushes. In April 2007, several months after returning from the Pacific, she called a meeting at a local art gallery. She invited all 43 local merchants, most of whom she’d known since she was a baby. For weeks before the meeting, she had scoured the Internet researching alternatives to plastic bags. She found a British company selling BioBags, fully biodegradable and compostable bags made from cornstarch, which look and feel almost exactly like plastic. She ordered a batch of them and quietly enlisted an ally — the local butcher. She asked him to test the cornstarch bags. If he found them strong enough for his meats, that might help persuade any skeptics. At the meeting, Hosking said, all eyes turned to the butcher. When he put his hand up in favor of the plastic-bag ban, everybody else followed — a unanimous vote.

Bottled water once carried a certain European mystique. But these days, it's the tap water enthusiasts, concerned about the environment, who get to act self-righteous. Just like it has become cool to bring your own cloth bags to the grocery store and your own mug to the coffee shop, the reusable water bottle is the hip, new eco accessory. One big push for the bottled water backlash came during World Water Day 2007, when San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom declared a ban on bottled water contracts for all city departments. Instead of bottled water vending machines, he installed large dispensers in city buildings that poured out pure tap water from the Sierra mountains. Other cities, from Chicago to Salt Lake, followed suit.
