MOVIE REVIEW
Capturing the Friedmans by Ed Gonzalez / Slant Magazine
Arnold Friedman was a Long Island school teacher accused in the late 80s of child molestation along with his youngest son Jesse. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, this film is best approached as two separate works: an oddly riveting chronicle of one family’s devastating demise and, less successfully, an attempt to shed light on the validity of pedophile witch-hunts.

ALTERNATIVE NEWS

US Troops 'Vandalize' Ancient City of Ur by Ed Vulliamy / The Observer (via Common Dreams News Center)
One of the greatest wonders of civilization, and probably the world's most ancient structure - the Sumerian city of Ur in southern Iraq - has been vandalized by American soldiers and airmen, according to aid workers in the area. They claim that US forces have spray-painted the remains with graffiti and stolen kiln-baked bricks made millennia ago. As a result, the US military has put the archaeological treasure, which dates back 6,000 years, off-limits to its own troops. Land immediately adjacent to Ur has been chosen by the Pentagon for a sprawling airfield and military base.

ENTERTAINMENT

The Amazing Grace of Pieta Brown from JerryKatz.us
There is a kind of sky-and-the-ground balance — a wholeness suggested by her name that is fully reflected in Pieta Brown's spiritual yet earthy music. Hypnotic and knowing, Brown sings and writes with a driven grace and deceptive simplicity, allowing space in both her lyrical constructs and delicate arrangements for words to breathe and bloom. As the eldest daughter of Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Greg Brown, Pieta Brown displays a distinctive, charismatic voice and a familial gift for creating precise, crisply-drawn miniatures, but above and beyond that, with the release of her debut, she has clearly established herself as an individual with a unique artistic vision and style.

SPIRITUALITY

Befriending Your Mind: An Interview With Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche by Ravi Dykema / Nexus: Colorado's Holistic Journal
Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche, eldest son of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche (1939-1987) and spiritual director of Shambhala International, is unique in the world of spiritual leaders. Having grown up and been educated in Tibet, India, Scotland, England and Boulder (including part of a year at Fairview High School), he bridges East and West. In 1995, he was formally installed as Sakyong, leader of both the spiritual and secular aspects of Shambhala, a Buddhist tradition emphasizing the basic goodness of all beings and teaching the art of courageous warriorship based on wisdom and compassion. The enthronement formalized Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche¹s lifelong commitment to work with others towards creating an enlightened society. Mipham Rinpoche recently spoke with Nexus publisher Ravi Dykema in Boulder about his youth, about the meaning of enlightenment, about the art of meditation and the path of spirituality.

HOLISTIC HEALTH

MSG - Food for Thought by Adrienne Samuels, Ph.D. / HolisticMed.com
How do we know that MSG makes some people ill? If it were up to our Food and Drug Administration (FDA), you wouldn't, because the fact that MSG causes adverse reactions in humans appears to be a well guarded secret. But adverse reactions to MSG were mentioned as early as 1968 in the New England Journal of Medicine. And in 1969, Dr. John Olney wrote the first article that linked brain damage in laboratory animals (particularly infant animals) to MSG ingestion. In 1970, manufacturers (not the FDA) agreed to take MSG out of baby food. In 1978 or so, they finally took it out of "baby food," but not out of all food that's fed to babies. Now, however, researchers have found a relationship between MSG and some of the dreaded neurodegenerative diseases such as ALS, Parkinsonism, Huntington's disease, and Alzheimer's disease, which all affect the elderly.

CONSCIOUS TRAVEL

Life in Death Valley by Kevin Jones/ WebWombat.com
There is no greater contrast in landscape on the globe than the one that awaits you as you continue your road trip around California by heading out of magical, lush Yosemite to the postively Martian terrain of the hottest place in the United States - Death Valley. In the space of half a day's solid driving, you will trade in the magnificence of Yosemite Valley, with its massive granite peaks and dense forests, for one the starkest, most godforesaken areas not just of California but of the world itself. Which is not to say that Death Valley is ugly. It has an awesome beauty all of its own but more on that later.

MASSAGE

Rosen Method Bodywork by Sandra Wooten / RosenSouthwest.com
I still clearly remember my first session with my teacher Marion Rosen. A memory of seeing my mother standing in the doorway of my childhood home came to me . She had died seven years earlier. Suddenly I missed her terribly. At that moment, with her hand on my upper back, Marion could feel and see my breath change and the muscles in my upper back relax. She asked, "What happened?" I felt very sad as I told her of the memory. Within a few moments, I was aware of her hand on my back again and of an unexpected sense of serenity. Later that evening, while reviewing the session, I was astonished by how the memory, the experience of my sadness and the ensuing physical and emotional relaxation correlated. On that day I learned about the profoundness of touch in the presence of someone who cares. Marion saw, felt and acknowledged the shift that had occurred in me. This was the beginning of my journey toward remembering and fully experiencing my aliveness. It was also the start of my abiding interest in Rosen Method bodywork.

VEGETARIAN FOOD

Sprouts - From Seed to Salad in One Week by Steve Meyerowitz / Sproutman.com
Sprouts are the only form of agriculture that can be locally grown and available in all four seasons. These "baby" vegetables are grown from seed to salad in only week. In fact, one pound of alfalfa seed will yield 10-14 pounds of fresh mini-salad greens. Whether you are on top of a mountain or in a bunker with artificial light, you can still grow this fast, organic food. Yes, it is fast food, but you won't be sacrificing any nutrition. Alfalfa sprouts have more chlorophyll than spinach, kale, cabbage or parsley. Alfalfa, sunflower, clover and radish sprouts are all 4% Protein. Compare that to spinach - 3%, Romaine lettuce -1.5% and Iceberg lettuce- 0.8%, and milk -3.3%. These foods all have about 90% water. But meat and eggs are the protein foods for Americans. Meat is 19% and eggs are 13% protein (and 11% fat). But Soybean sprouts have 28% protein, and lentil and pea sprouts are 26%. Soybeans sprouts have twice the protein of eggs and only 1/10 fat the fat.

YOGA

The Yogic Diet from Sivananda.org
The yogic diet is a vegetarian one, consisting of pure, simple, natural foods which are easily digested and promote health. Simple meals aid the digestion and assimilation of foods. It is best if we understand that the purpose of eating is to supply our being with the lifeforce,or Prana, the vital life energy. So the greatest nutritional plan for the Yoga student is the simple diet of natural fresh foods. The Yogi is concerned with the subtle effect that food has on his mind and astral body. He therefore avoids foods which are overly stimulating, preferring those which render the mind calm and the intellect sharp. One who seriously takes to the path of Yoga would avoid ingesting meats, fish, eggs, onions, garlic, coffee, tea (except herbal), alcohol and drugs.

TAROT

Psychic Self Defense for Tarot Readings by Rev. Jennifer Elizabeth Moore / BlueWitch.com
Whenever you provide a reading for someone, you open yourself to another person's life. You can be affected by this on many levels: physical, emotional, mental, psychic/spiritual, consciously and unconsciously. Whether you attribute this to thoughts, feelings and memories that were provoked within you during their session, or to a psychic transference of energy from the querent to you, there can be pronounced after-effects from a reading. When you have not properly filtered psychic energy you can find yourself feeling irritable, anxious, depressed, morose, drained, and/or preoccupied with the querent's situation and/or similar details from your own life. Therefore, it is wise to apply some psychic self-defense techniques to your Tarot practice. Psychic self-defense involves three basic steps: first, you clear and purify yourself of negativity and distractions; second, you connect and surround yourself with healthy energy; and third, you ground and discharge any extra energy you might have taken in.

Seven Ways to Fix the Criminal Justice System by Bo Lozoff / Renaissance Universal Magazine
The rate of violent crime hasn't significantly increased or decreased in the past fifteen years. And yet, the prison population in the US more than doubled during the l980s. What's more, the threat of prison does not seem to deter criminal behavior. Around 62 percent of all prison inmates nationwide are arrested again within three years. Prisons are not scaring criminals away from crime; they are incapacitating them so they are hardly fit for anything else. In other words, the criminal justice system that we're paying for so dearly simply isn't working. And yet we keep on throwing more money into it. So how do we start fixing what's broken? This article includes seven places to begin.

HOLISTIC ANIMAL CARE

Animal Acupuncture - Medicine with a Point Robert S. Goldstein, V.M.D., and Susan J. Goldstein / AlternativeMedicine.com
We confess to a bit of skepticism when our brother Martin, also a veterinarian, announced back in the mid 1970s that he was thinking about going to Georgia to become certified in acupuncture. At the time, our clinical experience in alternative medicine was in its embryonic stages and we found it easier to embrace and implement nutritional science than energy medicine. Despite the fact that the Chinese have practiced acupuncture on animals and humans for over 5,000 years, we had to see it to believe it. Our reluctance was overcome shortly after Marty received his certification as a veterinary acupuncturist. A dog in our clinic went into shock and experienced choppy breathing while undergoing surgery. A reaction to anesthesia is every veterinarian's worst nightmare. Just as emergency drugs were about to be administered, Marty appeared with a thin 28-gauge needle that he inserted at the junction of the nose and lip (in acupuncture language, the Governing Vessel 26). The patient immediately began breathing normally and his pale white color turned rosy pink. Since that day, we've been believers and have used acupuncture in our practice with excellent results.

ASTROLOGY & DIVINATION

Astrology, Sex and Great Lovers by Kim Farnell / Widgets Astrology World
How can you tell a great lover? Modern astrology often claims sex is an 8th house matter. Yet traditionally, sex and 'love making' is aligned with the 5th house. Even in modem terms, sex as a 'recreational' or 'casual experience' is clearly a 5th house activity. Those who like to be nit-picking about these matters may prefer to have sex in the 5th when it's for fun and the 8th when it involves issues of manipulation. But since few of us would like to ask the sort of questions needed to elicit an answer on this, at some point we have to make a choice. Personally, I have found that the 5th house is far more revealing when it comes to sexual matters, except in those instances when some form of abuse is involved.

ENVIRONMENT

Great Fish Going the Way of the Dinosaurs from Environment News Service
Ninety percent of all large fish in the world's oceans are gone, and just 10 percent remain after commercial fishing vessels have taken their toll over the past 50 years, according to a long term study conducted by Canadian and German scientists and released May 14 (2003). The scientists say there is an urgent need to attempt fisheries restoration on a global scale. "From giant blue marlin to mighty bluefin tuna, and from tropical groupers to Antarctic cod, industrial fishing has scoured the global ocean. There is no blue frontier left," says lead author Ransom Myers, a fisheries biologist based at Dalhousie University in Canada. "This isn't about just about one species," he says. "The sustainability of fisheries is being severely compromised worldwide."

SOCIAL ISSUES

World's 'Living Languages' Dwindling by Steve Connor / Independent UK
The number of "living" languages spoken in the world is dwindling faster than the decline in the planet's wildlife, according to a new study. Linguists estimate that there are 6,809 "living" languages in the world today, but 90 per cent of them are spoken by fewer than 100,000 people, and some languages are even rarer – 46 are known to have just one native speaker. Over the past 500 years, about 4.5 per cent of the total number of described languages have disappeared, compared with 1.3 per cent of birds and 1.9 per cent of mammals. Colonisation has had the strongest influence. Of the 176 living languages spoken by the tribes of North America, 52 have become extinct since 1600. Of the 235 languages spoken by the Aboriginal Australians, 31 have disappeared.
