Recipe of the Week: Sonya's French Lentil Soup from VegWeb.com
This makes a LOT of soup, but you will love it so much on these cold winter days that it won't last but a few days. I also find that it freezes pretty well.

QUOTE OF
THE WEEK
"Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance."

ALTERNATIVE NEWS

CBS Refuses to Air MoveOn's 'Bush In 30 Seconds' Ad by John Nichols / The Nation
The MoveOn.org Voter Fund recently conducted a "Bush in 30 Seconds" TV ad contest, in which it promised that the winning entry would be shown during the Super Bowl broadcast. MoveOn, the innovative internet-based activist community, was willing to pay the $2 million it would cost to air the ad. And no one suggests that the ad is inaccurate or inappropriate; indeed, Fox TV commentator Bill O'Reilly, no fan of MoveOn, says: "It's not offensive, (it) makes a legitimate point politically." Yet, CBS is refusing to run the MoveOn ad, claiming in the words of CBS spokesperson Dana McClintock, "We have a policy against accepting advocacy advertising." The reason? CBS told MoveOn that it does not want to trouble viewers with commercials that address "controversial issues of public importance." For more about the Bush in 30 Seconds contest and to view winning ads, visit www.bushin30seconds.com

ENTERTAINMENT

Bruce Cockburn - Changing the World One Song at a Time by Pamela Murray Winters / Dirty Linen Magazine
Bruce Cockburn doesn't pick fights, but at this point in his life, he does pick his battles. Now 57, he has been recording for over three decades. He has released over 25 albums — with EPs, compilations, and various repackagings, it's hard to maintain an exact count. He has worked hard to achieve a level of critical and popular success unheard of for most singer/songwriters. He's even changed the world. Of his work in support of causes such as human rights in Central America, landmine eradication, and ecological concerns, he said: "I think all of us have a responsibility to do what we can, whatever it is, whether it's arguing with people in a bar or getting up and sounding off in front of a whole bunch of people or being directly involved, as many of the people I've had the privilege of working with are, in helping other people."

SPIRITUALITY

Why We Need the Numinous by Amara Rose / Speaker, Writer and Sacred Ritual Facilitator
Living in harmony with natural rhythms expands our sense of what's possible. The "reality police" have become our invisible, accepted jailers. Ritual is a way to re-story our lives, revivifying the myths that have kept cultures through the ages cooking up a cauldron of creative possibility. According to the eminent mythologist, Joseph Campbell, a myth isn't something that never happened; it's something that is always happening. Disconnected from the source of this knowing, we pervert our productive energy. Without a mythological model for how to resourcefully contribute to the collective, teenagers may resort to gang membership and violence - mimicking their elders, who wage war on their own life support system. Take time to wander and wonder. Sit in a stream and sing. Be willing to follow your inner guidance-even if you look like a fool. When you can descend to the depths of your being and release what no longer serves, beginning anew in defenselessness and trust, you're on your way to becoming a vessel of wisdom for the tribe. Enjoy the journey, and remember to resurface when you're complete. We welcome-and need-your unique gifts from the well.

HOLISTIC HEALTH

Ayurveda: The Mother of Natural Healing by Dr. Michael Tierra, L.ac., O.M.D., Herbalist, AHG / PlanetHerbs.com
Like yoga, Ayurveda embodies concepts of body-mind care which includes spiritual philosophies that transcend religious orthodoxy. Ayurveda, which translated means "The Science of Life", is similar to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in that it represents a practical application of universal philosophical concepts based on universal life energy which, in TCM, is called "qi", and in Ayurveda, "prana". Both systems go back over 5000 years with Ayurveda, according to records in ancient Vedic texts, being practiced before 4000 B. C as the oldest. Both TCM and Ayurveda are based upon a universal concept expressed in nature in bi-polar terms called Yin-Yang in TCM and Shiva-Shakti in Ayurveda. As a result, all diseases, medicines (mostly herbs) and therapies are similarly classified bi-polarly as "heating or cooling", "strong or weak", and so forth. Both systems further subdivide diseases into a concept of "five elements" and "three humours", the latter of which in Ayurveda assumes a more pivotal position than in TCM.

CONSCIOUS TRAVEL

Waiting for the Sun at Walden Pond by Francis McGovern / LiteraryTraveler.com
The morning was a time that offered much to Henry David Thoreau and Walden Pond seemed a fitting place to celebrate the sun’s arrival. It was dark on a quiet winter morning and snow lined the side of the road. I began to walk down along the north side of the pond towards Thoreau’s house site. The sky was dark and some snow had melted along the trail. Ice was covering the pond and enough snow remained to give the illusion that the ice was a field. I found a spot beside a solitary pine about half way down that seemed to jut out enough for a good view. Looking off to my right, I could the see the train tracks that run by the west side of the pond and as I listened, I could hear the silence softly interrupted by the constant breathing of the highway not more than a mile away. The sky was getting lighter and part of me half expected to see Thoreau’s ghost as I waited for the sun.

MASSAGE

Healing Wombs: Maya Abdominal Massage by Patricia Burke / OfSpirit.com
The Arvigo Techniques of Maya abdominal massage address the position and health of the pelvic and abdominal organs. The work is best known for the correction of the prolapsed, fallen or tipped uterus, and for the prevention and treatment of benign prostate enlargement in men. By shifting the uterus back into place, homeostasis, or the natural balance of the body, is restored in the pelvic area and the surrounding organs. Toxins are flushed and nutrients that help to tone tissue and balance hormones are restored to normal order. This is essential for healthy pregnancy, labor, and delivery. Old adhesions from invasive treatments to the pelvic and abdominal area, including fibroid tumors, endometriosis, and cesarean delivery are diminished when addressed by uterine massage. In addition, digestion, urinary and bladder problems can be helped. This type of massage is also helpful in increasing blood flow to the pelvic region for men. Untold numbers of hysterectomies and Caesarian births could be prevented with this simple, safe, easy to learn massage technique.

VEGETARIAN FOOD

What Makes Wild Plants Special? by "Wildman" Steve Brill / VegWeb.com
Back before the invention of agriculture, and even before the day the first Big Mac slithered and slopped down the assembly line, people depended on wild foods for survival. Because wild plants, to survive, have to cope with herbivores, competing plants, weather, and changing climate, they've evolved extraordinary fitness. That’s why they contain concentrations of high-quality carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, as well as vitamins, minerals, and fiber, thus serving themselves and us. By the way, many of the flavors we enjoy, such as sourness, pungency, saltiness, bitterness, and the flavors of onions, garlic, wintergreen, licorice, and mint, are adaptations that discourage herbivores.

YOGA

Balancing The Immune System With Yoga by Jeff Migdow, M.D. / YogaSite.com
Yoga postures, pranayama, relaxation and meditation are powerful tools for helping to stimulate or calm the immune response depending on the situation. Increased allergy symptoms indicate that your immune system is working overtime. A stuffy nose, ears and sinuses, inflamed eyes, headaches, sore throat and difficulty breathing are all caused by the mucus-producing process of the inmmune system attacking innocuous invaders. Through relaxation, the nervous system can tell the immune system to settle down and stop attacking the foreign bodies, which are naturally cleared out in a non-allergic person by sneezing once or twice a day. When the immune system backs off, inflammation and mucus decrease and symptoms diminish. Practicing any yoga posture in a relaxing way with slow deep breathing and the intention to let go and relax the nervous system can be very beneficial in decreasing the symptoms of allergies.

TAROT

What Does It Mean When My Tarot Reading Doesn't Seem to Answer My Question? by T.M.W. / TarotTreats.com
As a student ... and as a novice reader, this phenomenon was the most puzzling, discouraging and infuriating part of the process for me to deal with. It does happen this way sometimes ... and only through keeping written records of my own questions and experiences through the years - along with the Tarot's responses, even at their most obscure and baffling was I able to see the pattern of what seems to be happening here. There are actually a number of possibilities. First of all, your question may be invalid for some reason. This can be the most perplexing problem to grasp, especially in some cases that seem very cut-and-dried ... but your thinking, or your perspectives, or your intentions may be so off-target ... that there is no relevant answer. I have learned, therefore, that usually in the very obscurity of the answer, you will eventually see how the Tarot is trying to redirect your attention along lines you don't even know about and aren't even considering at the moment.

READING ROOM

The Dream Frontier by Serge Joseph Grandbois / Channeler, NLP Practitioner, Reiki Master and Author
You can travel vast distances fast as thought and converse with long term friends that are found only in dreams. You can experience what can be called past lives, or even projections of consciousness (astral travels), or visit specific locations and the very same location(s) over many years. These are places that are only found in the dream state. Too often we make civilized attempts to elevate ourselves and our societies above what is 'perceived' as the superstitions of the old ways, and we can quickly relegate the whole idea of dreams as no more than the remnants of the past. Unfortunately, a study and understanding of our dreams and dreams in general can immensely enrich the whole landscape of our lives, often in ways we don't foresee immediately. We can benefit greatly in realizing that even today, in modern times, dreams play an important role in whom and what we are as 'beings'. In this series of writings on dreams, I hope to be able to shed some light on an often misunderstood or misinterpreted dimension of our very human existence.

HOLISTIC ANIMAL CARE

Holistic Approaches to Weight Loss for Pets by Robert S. Goldstein, V.M.D., and Susan J. Goldstein / AlternativeMedicine.com
Unfortunately, in a domestic environment, where cats and dogs are more likely to spend their days lolling on the family sofa than hunting for dinner, their survival instinct to eat as much as possible can result in unwanted pounds, even obesity. At any stage of life, obesity can have a negative impact on your animal's body, mind and spirit. It has been linked to diseases of all the major organs, takes a toll on joints and contributes to hormonal and glandular imbalances, which can result in conditions such as diabetes, liver disease and cancer. Does your pet need to lose weight? As a general rule your dog or cat's chest should be broader than his belly, and you should be able to feel your animal's ribs. If this is not the case, it may be time to slim down.

ASTROLOGY & DIVINATION

Astrological Trends for 2004 By Adrian Ross Duncan / World-of-Wisdom.com
With the passing of the Saturn/Pluto opposition the “war on terror” is now an anachronism. Saturn has moved on into Cancer and domestic issues are more likely to dominate the agenda. We are entering a period of consolidation and order. On a business level the Saturn/Pluto opposition from Gemini to Sagittarius has resulted in a dramatic weeding out of weak players in telecommunications and travel. Since Uranus makes it final entry into Pisces on the first day of 2004, the rules of the game are bound to change. What we have witnessed in the last seven years, since Uranus entered Aquarius, is the transformation of world consciousness through the accessibility of the web, the ubiquity of Email, and the possession of mobile phones. Information and self-profiling is available to everyone who can reach a computer, and this has had a democratizing effect. Gifted people all over the world can now access business markets anywhere. A world without borders has been created, and in business terms this means that people can combine skills and work together whether they live in India, Japan, Europe or America, and get immediate results.

ENVIRONMENT

The Tennessee Tree Massacre by Alex Shoumatoff / OnEart Magazine
If there were an international tribunal that prosecuted crimes against the planet, like the one in The Hague that deals with crimes against humanity, what is happening on the Cumberland Plateau in eastern Tennessee would undoubtedly be indictable. The crime - one of many clandestine ecocides American corporations are committing around the world - has taken place over three decades. About 200,000 acres on this tableland have already been clear-cut by the paper industry, and the cutting continues. Where once grew some of the most biologically rich hardwood forest in North America's Temperate Zone (which extends from the Gulf of Mexico to southern Canada), there are now row after row of fast-growing loblolly pine trees genetically engineered to yield the most pulp in the shortest time. But the paper industry's insatiable appetite for timber has met with unexpected competition from an equally voracious insect. In the last four years, an estimated 50 to 70 percent of the pines planted on the plateau have been devoured by the southern pine beetle.

SOCIAL ISSUES

Corporations Are Psychopathic, New Documentary Argues by Stephen Leahy / InterPress Service (via Common Dreams News Center)
Corporations are not only the most powerful institutions in the world, they are also psychopathic, a new Canadian documentary on globalization elegantly argues. While the corporation has the rights and responsibilities of ”a legal person”, its owners and shareholders are not liable for its actions. Moreover, the film explains, a corporation's directors are legally required to do what is best for the company, regardless of the harm created. What kind of person would a corporation be? A clinical psychopath, answers the documentary, which is now playing in four Canadian theatres. The filmmakers show four examples of corporations at work - including garment sweatshops in Honduras and Indonesia - to demonstrate that this ”legal person” is inherently amoral, callous and deceitful. The corporation, the film points out, ignores any social and legal standards to get its way, and does not suffer from guilt while mimicking the human qualities of empathy, caring and altruism.
