THOUGHTS & EXPRESSION
|
Enchantress in the Wind by Michael Levy / PointOfLife.com
As I tap the keys on my computer keyboard the ferocious winds outside my beach front condo are howling and rattling the storm shutters. It seems to be saying "I’ll huff and I’ll puff and I’ll try to blow your condo down." Or, perhaps it is saying, "Feel my power and respect it." You know, I like the second voice far more than the first one..

Singer Cat Stevens Refused Entry to the US by Mark Sage / Independent UK (via Common Dreams News Center)
Singer Cat Stevens and his daughter were escorted off a diverted transatlantic flight by FBI agents on Tuesday, Sept. 21 (2004). The pop star, who converted to Islam, was denied access to the US because his name was on a security "watch list", government security sources said. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) said the singer was denied access to the US "on national security grounds" and would be returned to Britain. Flight 919 from London diverted 600 miles to Bangor International Airport after US security officials were told Stevens was aboard. He had been allowed to board the flight after United Airlines officials initially failed to spot his name, which he has changed to Yusuf Islam - on the watch list, the TSA said. Passengers were at first told the diversion was due to refuelling and eventually arrived in Washington six hours late. For the singer's reaction to his deportation, see this article.

State of Emergency: Comedian Margaret Cho Speaks Out
by Silja J.A. Talvi / InTheseTimes.com
Comedian Margaret Cho pulls no punches. And nothing, absolutely nothing, is off-limits. On stage, Cho’s material ranges from the X-rated to the extraordinarily personal. Body image, peculiar forms of motherly love, gay sex and George W. Bush; everything is a fair target. In the tradition of comedians like Lenny Bruce and Richard Pryor, Cho refuses to let shame ruin her game. Cho’s journey to being one of the most successful and recognizable comedians in America has been hard-traveled. In the aftermath of her early ’90s network television show, All-American Girl, Cho’s internal battles with eating disorders, addiction and low self-esteem nearly killed her. As she struggled with the remnants of what she perceived to be a ruined Hollywood career, Cho lashed out with a furious and bittersweet comedy that led to a remarkable comeback. Her riotous and radically pro-gay, pro-feminist, pro-sex comedy tour, "I’m The One That I Want", led to an eponymous video/DVD and book. Her new audiences were enthralled, and Cho never looked back.

Spiritual Healing for Organized Religion Refugees
By Breianne Pryse / Massage Therapist, Bioset Practitioner, and Certified Hypnotherapist
I consider anyone an Organized Religion Refugee who has 1) been physically or psychologically damaged by organized religion experiences and/or 2) cut themselves off from Creator/Source/God due to trauma suffered in a traditional church. Regardless of how long ago the problems occurred, the energy from these experiences tends to stay within the body, often manifesting in physical and psychological problems. Now… this is not to criticize organized religion. If you are happy in your church, congratulations! Others haven't been so fortunate. Some examples of O.R.R.'s: 1) a woman donated large quantities food to a church food bank. When her husband became ill, she asked for some food to feed her family, only to be denied because it was only for 'needy people'. 2) A woman sent an email to a priest, asking for help because her husband was beating her. The response she received was that if she was being a good wife, she wouldn't be beaten. 3) A man was continually beaten and abused by nuns during his days of Catholic school.
Why would this group want to go through a healing process? Besides the physical ramifications, they know there's something missing in their lives. They just don't know what it is. The Creator desires a relationship with everyone, regardless of their past. This healing process helps to heal the body while re-establishing this bond.

CONSCIOUS TRAVEL |
Alternative Turkey by Rick Barr / BootsNAll.com
"You won't find any gay clubs in Turkey. They castrate gay people there." Such was the late night chat room ramblings of a well-informed member of the American gay community. Consequently, it was not without some trepidation that I arrived in the fabled city of Istanbul with thoughts of sad looking eunuchs reduced to singing 18th century castrati on street corners. Admittedly there were people on street corners, hundreds of them, old wizened men proffering razor blades, condoms and doubtfully labeled Viagra, bescarved weather-beaten women displaying a bewildering array of power tools and dozens and dozens of darkly handsome men mesmerisingly attracting your gaze. Maybe Turkey isn't as liberal as Western countries, but its people seem more genuinely friendly and probably more tolerant. The city of Istanbul, as a crossroads between east and west, has been a mix of diverse cultures for centuries, all living together in harmony. Maybe as the gay culture, in its own right, develops here it will find its own place in that centuries-old tolerance. It won't be easy. It's a relatively new country, shaking off its misunderstood image of the past whilst incorporating everything western, along with its values and perceptions.

Electromagnetic Fields and Your Immune System
by Michael R. Neuert, MA, BSME / ShareGuide.com
Electromagnetic Fields are a type of low-frequency radiation emitted from everything electrical around us: power lines, transformers, electrical wiring, computers, TVs, lights, clocks, appliances, etc. Recent studies have linked EMFs to increased leukemia, lymphoma, brain cancer, melanoma, breast cancer, miscarriage, birth defects, suicide, and most recently, Alzheimer's disease. This wide range of health problems may be due to EMFs' effects on the pineal gland, which is the master gland of the body, secreting hormones which control our circadian rhythms, and regulate important functions of the brain and all the other glands. Researchers have discovered that EMFs can suppress the pineal glands' secretion of melatonin, a hormone which controls our wake/sleep cycle, moods and task performance. Depressed melatonin levels are associated with mood changes, depression and psychiatric disorders. Melatonin also plays a critical cancer role, by increasing the phytotoxicity of the body's natural killer lymphocytes. Suppression of pineal gland function has been implicated in the etiology of breast, ovarian, prostate and melanoma cancers.

MASSAGE / BODYWORK |
Poised For An Insured Future
by Kelle Walsh / Massage Magazine
While the massage community debates the need for a separate category of medical massage, a movement is already underway to position therapists to reap the insurance benefits of recognition as health-care providers.
The movement has momentum in the industry's national associations, education programs and in the only Department of Education-recognized certification board. And massage therapists are eager to get in on insurance benefits that can translate into rates as high as $150 per hour. Already 37 percent of American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) members say they are involved with third-party reimbursement, mostly in the form of claims for workman's compensation and automobile accidents. But when it comes to massage therapists being recognized as health-care providers who can work on "medically necessary" conditions, some say change isn't happening fast enough. In the past six months two new entities have emerged with alternative solutions to hasten the acceptance of massage therapists to work in the medical model. One new association claims it will provide massage therapists with the backing to effectively beat insurance-company resistance. The other portends a future tier of highly trained medical-massage specialists that will break through the glass ceiling imposed by insurance.

Uses and Storage Ideas for Home Grown Herbs by Jill Jones / HerbalGardens.com
Okay, you planted a beautiful herb garden with all sorts of intriguing herbs, flowers and vegetable varieties. It's all thriving almost too well. You have so much you don't know what to do with it all and your family and friends haven't a clue how to use this exotic produce. If my family even hears the word "eggplant" they run screaming into the night! Sound familiar? Maybe we can help. Many herbs will freeze or dry beautifully to extend their shelf life. We prefer to use them fresh out of the garden for best flavor but when you have so much so quickly that's not always possible. You always want to be pinching back things like basil, thyme, oregano and chives so that you get fullest production out of the season. Plants like rosemary like a good cutting now and then to keep them from getting too woody. If you haven't planned a meal around your pruning, try some of the ideas in this article to preserve your herbs.

Kundalini - The Awakening of Self
by Shakta Khalsa /
People who do yoga, or have at least some understanding of yoga, are curious about Kundalini Yoga. In the past, the Kundalini energy has been referred to as "serpent power", and other exotic sounding terms, but Kundalini Yoga, as taught by my teacher, Yogi Bhajan, is much more simple and close to home than you might think. Kundalini comes from the root word, kundal, in Sanskrit, which means "the lock of the hair from the beloved." The uncoiling of this "hair" is the awakening of the kundalini, the unlimited potential that already exists in every human. The easiest way to understand kundalini is to acknowledge that there is the universal spirit, sometimes referred to as God. God uncoils him/her/itself. This uncoiling process is known as kundalini. What is uncoiling and awakening is you, nothing more and nothing less. It is a normal capacity that most people simply are not utilizing. Yoga is the science of the self, and kundalini is the awakening of the self. It is that simple.

TAROT |
The Bottom Card
by Bonnie Moss / Golden Cup Cafe
The mystery of the tarot cards never cease to amaze me- some readings
do not reflect the answer the querent hopes to hear. It may lead the
querent to think of an issue furthest from his/her mind. When this
happens in a reading and the querent gives me that puzzled look,
I always take a look at another card for confirmation. This is where I have learned to look at the bottom card, instead of
choosing a random card from the deck. Or at times, I get that
“nagging” feeling deep within, I draw upon whatever insight I
can one more time from another card . Again, this prompted me to
start taking a look at the bottom card. This card helps to weave together the wisdom of the cards ;
for a one-card reading, it adds extra dimension to the reading.
It supports the wisdom the card /s reflects, or highlights an
issue that could have been missed. I do not need to take
a “peek”at another card to confirm what ‘s presented before me. No matter what spread I use, the bottom card provides a summary,
a validation, an advice, or presents a different angle to the answer,
or highlights an underlying issue yet to be dealt with.

READING ROOM |
Releasing Acceptance, Creating Free Will
By Kelley Harrell, C. Ht. / Shamanic Healer and Author
In spiritual healing and energy work, the state of acceptance has strong significance. It is an indicator that the healing process has begun, that direction to fully manifest healing is needed. At this level, acceptance is not static, but a pivotal state of being that never instills or evokes a sense of sheer joy. In fact, even saying the word, the mouth is closed and tight, often formed through gritted teeth, leaving the chest and heart chakra feeling empty. In that light, Acceptance can be viewed somewhat as Denial's extroverted lethargic best friend. They are very closely related. Where Denial is fine with staying home and pretending there is no party to go to, Acceptance embodies the spirit of party in herself, but doesn't have the motivation to leave the house and actually experience the party. In short, acceptance is a mental task unfinished, requiring further attention in the soul.

HOLISTIC ANIMAL CARE |
Bird Body Language by Tiffany Cain, BS / PetEducation.com
Pet birds have been described by some as moody: playful and loving one minute, demanding and aloof the next. Sometimes very obvious and sometimes very subtle, a bird's body language can give you insight into what your bird needs and wants. Although different bird species display different body languages, the behaviors discussed in this article are observed in most pet birds, some more often than others and some more prominently than others. Observing your bird's eyes, vocalizations, wings, tail, beak, and overall posture can be very telling. Unlike humans, birds are able to control their irises, enlarging and shrinking their pupils rapidly. This display is called "flashing" or "pinning" and birds may do this when they are excited, greatly interested in something, or when they are angry, frightened, or aggressive. Eye pinning should be taken into context with the bird's immediate environment and body posture to get an accurate emotional reading. In the wild, birds use various vocalizations to warn others of danger, attract mates, protect their territory, and maintain social contacts. Most birds are highly vocal and many times may be trying to communicate with you.

ASTROLOGY & DIVINATION |
Pluto and Your Psyche
by Jonathan Keyes, B.S. / StarIQ.com
On February 18, 1930, a 24-year-old astronomy researcher by the name of Clyde Tombaugh discovered a small planet at the periphery of the solar system. Named after the Greek god of the underworld, Pluto has fascinated astrologers ever since. In Greek mythology, Pluto was responsible for the abduction of the young maiden Persephone from Earth down into Hades. Through divine efforts, she was released from Pluto’s domain, but in exchange she had to return for six months out of the year (three months in some versions). During this time, the land would lay barren and winter would prevail. This story says a lot about the nature and character of the planet Pluto and how it can affect our health and well-being. In this story of abduction and eventual release, there is a sense of a transformative process taking place. I want to look at activities that will help us to garner wisdom from these “Plutonic” experiences.

Greenlanders Mystified by Incredible Shrinking Glacier from the Agence France Presse / via Common Dreams News Center
Residents of Ilulissat, the town on Greenland's western coast famed for the majestic icebergs that glide through its icefjord, nearly choked on their morning coffee as they read the news: the town's biggest attraction was melting away. The Groenlands Posten newspaper sent locals into a tizzy when a few weeks ago it described how the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier, one of the most active glaciers in the world, had receded by more than five kilometers (three miles) in the past two years. The chilling news came just two months after UNESCO placed the Ilulissat Icefjord on the World Heritage List. "The combination of a huge ice-sheet and the dramatic sounds of a fast-moving glacial ice-stream calving into a fjord covered by icebergs makes for a dramatic and awe-inspiring natural phenomenon," the UN's cultural body said. The Ilulissat Icefjord "is an outstanding example of a stage in the Earth's history: the last ice age of the Quaternary Period". The glacier is one of only a few whose ice cap reaches all the way down to the sea, with more than 35 cubic kilometers of ice cascading down the ice sheet into the ice-choked fjord each year.

Battle For Bandwidth - How One US Company Captured Iraq's Lucrative Wireless Market by Michael Scherer / MotherJones.com
The auctioning off of Iraq began in the summer of 2003 in a packed conference room at the Grand Hyatt in Amman, Jordan. More than 300 executives had gathered from around the world to vie for a piece of one natural resource Saddam Hussein never managed to exploit—the nation’s cellular phone frequencies. With less than 4 percent of Iraqis connected to a phone, the open spectrum could earn billions of dollars for the eager executives working the room. back in Washington, D.C., the focus had already turned from the needs of Iraq to the bottom lines of a select few corporations. “The battle for Iraq is not over oil,” said one Defense Department official involved in communications. “It’s over bandwidth.” And no one was fighting harder for a piece of the spectrum than the consortium led by American cellular giant Qualcomm with such business partners as Lucent Technologies and Samsung of South Korea. They wanted to follow U.S. troops into Iraq with Qualcomm’s patented cellular technology, called CDMA, a system no nation in the Middle East had yet been willing to adopt. Even as the bombs fell over Baghdad, Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), whose district includes many Qualcomm employees, had tried to wrap his favored company in the flag.

ARTIST OF THE WEEK |
Atmara Rebecca Cloe's says her inspiration comes from "lots of sources, and ultimately from the Universe, the 'all that is' that we are all a part of. Sometimes I see something someone else has done and take the kernel of the idea and let it change and grow in whatever way it wants to. Sometimes I have a vague idea of an image I'd like to create, and I go from there and let it grow. Generally, I feel that there is an energy, another dimensional "beingness", if you will, that wants to be express through me and be given a form in this dimension. Sometimes it guides me very specifically as to what form to create and other times it just develops organically over time. At its best my work is a wonderful form of channeling and I feel so honored to be able to do it." New World Creations offers posters and archival prints in a variety of sizes, both retail and wholesale, starting at $9.95. Subjects include Goddesses, Angels, Visionary Landscapes, Florals, Feng Shui, Dolphins, Mandalas, Fractals, Crystals, Ascension, and Divine Light. Licensing and commissions welcome.
